Each letter is numbered according to its place in the alphabet with a pitch assigned accordingly; i.e., the letter “a” (the first letter in the alphabet) corresponds to a pitch of “c” (the first note in a 12-note chromatic progression), with additional criteria noted, such as the elimination of duplicate pitches.
